Everything with multiplayer modes (MOBA, Action, FPS, etc, which is not an MMORPG)
World of Tanks. I love WWII tanks! Played on and off since Beta. My account (not bad eh, that's a blue 2057 WN8 rating, meaning I'm a great player heh heh =p).
Quake. O.M.G! This is a legendary game! Imagine playing an FPS game with 400-500 ms ping! Played mainly in US-based servers (Mplayer) through dial-up modem, which racked up my dad's phone bills to RM200-300 per month! Whew! Those were the days people! We got no ADSL (that means no Streamyx on copper cable, let alone fiber optics!) or ISDN or cable in Malaysia back then. Nuthin'.
One fact you might not know: Telekom Malaysia (TM) used to host Quake game servers and we know (guessed) their staff was playing by their very low latency (<70ms), which we called them as the low ping bastards (LPB)!
Counter Strike 1.6. Oh, those memories playing this game in cyber cafes! This is where we learned to 'snipe' and 'camp'. Back in uni days, students from the Faculty of Economy organized a mini 'solo' CS tourney (yeah really, even though CS is a team-based game) and I won 5th place... not proud of it but I got a prize for that.
Played this game at Microsoft's MSN Gaming Zone located in USA. This was the first time I, as a teenager, played games with mostly older adults. At one point my ranking was 21st in the ladder (that also means in the entire world!). However, the population was low and this game was not that popular anyway.
Surprisingly fun, for awhile. Then, it feels repetitive and I got bored.
I was a huge fan of X-Men (collected X-Men comics in the 90s). This collectible card game... was a bit infuriating haha. I only reached level 81 and called it quits, as it started to get into my nerves (not good for an aging man, right? =p). Plus, I hated the 'snapping' mechanism.
Here's my favorite deck (yes, it's old and I played from season 1 to 3 or 4 only):
We were just kids, and my schoolmate friend and I figured out how to setup a multiplayer game using 28.8 / 33.6 / 56 kBps modems to play online from our houses. Although we only tried it once or twice, but it was a revelation, I tell you! In the 90s, this was soo cool. And I absolutely love JA1, JA:DG and JA2!
Defense of the Ancients (DoTA). A mod for Warcraft 3. To me, version 5.84x is the beginning of both DOTA and MOBA. Then came in v6.41x. And then finally DOTA2. Had a lot of fun in cyber cafes and at home playing this game (eventually the game was too toxic / time consuming and I left for good).
I played the first and second seasons. Created more than a dozen emails just to replay that level 1-10! I did not stay long as MOBA no longer suits my aging body and mind (in gaming, age >25 is already old).
World Cyber Games. The only international game tournament I participated. Yeah, I was literally a newbie in the competitive scene and got my self whooped in Quake III Arena (2001) and Fifa 2002 (2002) in Malaysia preliminaries. Imagine not figuring out strafe jumping (bunny hopping) in Q3:A only after the tournament ended, haha! (you think Youtube existed back then???)
FIFA 2001-2004. Played a few versions of this game with my uni friends. We had to buy a hub and later changed to a switch to connect long CAT5/6 cables (up to 20m I think?) between our compartments and rooms!
Entered 1 mini tournament during Engineering Faculty's Week (forgot the name) and won second prize. First prize won by Matjap from the Faculty of Law, LOL.
The Warcraft series, especially WIII is one of the best strategy games ever. Similar to the FIFA game above, we played network games using our hub or switch.
Played this once they offered free accounts. By then the game has aged and already has low population. The lag also adds to mediocre gaming experience and I didn't stay long.
Another fun multiplayer game. Nothing too special except to relive the WWII itch.
A legendary game. I didn't play the multiplayer mode that long but it gave me a lasting impact! Met hackers and cheaters in-game LOL. D1 is actually only suitable for single player IMO.
Another legendary RTS game (I played since C&C: Covert Operations). Had a blast playing this game in CC and using our hub/switch.
Besides Jagged Alliance, this was another game my friend and I tried on our dial-up modems. Only played several sessions (the telephone line would be engaged and no one could call our houses when we were gaming), but it was a great experience nonetheless!
Duke Nukem 3D was one of the hottest game in the 90s; any old fart would know =p
